Dance Department Syllabus

Course Description:

This course, depending upon the level, will provide the student with fundamental to advanced dance skills.  Further, this course will develop student appreciation of dance as an art form and lifetime activity.  The student will develop kinesthetic awareness, movement memory, creative abilities and aesthetic appreciation of various dance forms.  This course shall also enhance the development and maintenance of physical fitness, self-confidence and independence through the use of the body by providing informal showings during class, as well as performance in one live concert during the third nine weeks.

Class Procedures:

  • All students must report to their Dance Locker Room before the tardy bell rings.
  • Proper dance attire is expected daily.
  • Personal belongings need to be secured in your dance issued locker or in a school issued locker.  The dance department is not responsible for lost or stolen items.  ALWAYS secure personal belongings.  Please do not store your things in the dance studios.
  • Students will have five minutes to dress out and report to the dance studio.

Dance Studio Procedures:

  • No food or drinks are allowed in the dance studios except for water in a sealed container.
  • No outside shoes are to be worn in the dance studio.  Dance shoes used in the studios should strictly be worn inside only – never outside.
  • Students will not touch the mirrors, hang or pull on the ballet barres, or use make-up, hairspray, or any beauty products in liquid or powder form in the dance studios.
  • Only dance students will be allowed in the studios and dance locker rooms.
  • All before and after school rehearsals must be run using class procedures.  This includes proper attire, securing your belongings, and all dance studio procedures.  Rehearsals must be scheduled.

Classroom & Professional Responsibilities:

  • Dancers are respectful toward people, spaces, and equipment at all times.
  • Dancers do not chew gum at any time.
  • Dancers think “Safety First!”  This includes no jewelry, proper attire, and mental preparedness.
  • Dancers always dress out, regardless of injury or illness.
  • Dancers are always considerate, polite and responsive audience members and community role models.
  • Dancers may not post or share any dances or rehearsals to the internet in any form or through electronic devices.  This includes You Tube, Facebook, personal pages, or any public postings.  The Dance Department is a “Social Media Safe-Zone.”

Proper Dance Clothing:

  • Solid colored leotard or form fitting top that does not expose midriff or undergarments. Bra straps should not show.  No baggy T-shirts.
  • Solid dark tights, dance pants, or sweat pants, of a safe length.  Knees must be covered (no shorts) and pants cannot drag the floor.  No pajama pants or distracting designs.
  • Dancers will dance barefoot.  Dance shoe usage will be determined by the dance instructor based on the dance genre being taught.
  • Hair must be in a pony tail, off of the neck throughout entire class period.  Bangs and short hair must be clipped back.


  • Spiral notebook, minimum 70 pages, to be left in class
  • Pen or pencil
  • Student Planner – either paper or electronic
  • Dance Concert Costume: 
    • Tights and/or Camisole:  Each student is required to purchase either a pair of dance tights and/or a nude/skin-tone dance camisole leotard to wear under their concert costume.  These items will be discussed with students in class. Due on or before the first day of dance concert rehearsals.
    • Any costumes used for performance in any dance concerts will be provided to the student free of charge.  In the instance that a student loses his/her costume following a performance, that student will be responsible for payment for the complete replacement for that costume.  Costume cost is individual according to the price paid.
  • Locks:  A standard lock will be provided for you.  However, if this lock is lost or broken a five dollar fee will be assessed.  Personal locks will not be allowed.
  • Fundraisers: The Dance Department does not charge a course fee for dance courses.  All funding for performance costumes, dance supplies, scholarships, etc. is generated through Dance Department fundraisers.  All students are expected to participate in all fundraisers.

Grading Policy:

  • Summative Grades (performances, projects and movement evaluations) – 75%
  • Formative Grades (written assignments, quizzes, class participation) – 25%
    • Class Participation: A daily grade will be given based on class participation and proper classroom etiquette.  Failure to comply with classroom procedures, or dress out policies will affect daily grades.
      • Point System: 
        • Each student will begin with a 100% daily grade. Any violation of class procedures, classroom responsibilities, or proper attire will result in a ten point deduction per violation.  Dance attire will be available to ensure student success.  Failure to dress and participate will result in a zero for that daily grade.
        • Extended illness or injury requires proper documentation from the supervising physician.  Remember, dancers always dress out, regardless of injury or illness.
        • Live Dance Performance: ALL LEVELS!
          • Each semester you are required to see a LIVE DANCE performance of a professional or pre-professional modern or ballet company (formative grade).  Theatre Dance 1-4 may also see a professional or pre-professional musical.  Please turn-in your program and ticket stub for the performance within a week of seeing it.  The performance must be live, not on videotape.  If you are not sure if the performance will count toward credit, check BEFORE you go! The program and ticket stub are due by December 11th for the fall semester and May 27th for the spring semester.
  • Semester Exam (written and / or performance assessment) – 20%
  • Effort & Conduct Grades (professionalism, attitude, attentiveness, cooperation, work habits, punctuality, organization and preparedness)

Make Up Policy:

  • Students are responsible for assignments and movement materials missed during absences (excused or unexcused) and must complete a dance related project to be discussed with their dance instructor.
  • Students are responsible for checking with their dance instructor regarding missed work on the day they return to class.  All make-up work is due the following class period.  Please refer to the CFB ISD School District Policies regarding the acceptance of make-up work.

Concert Performance Requirements:

  • Class participation
  • Professional behavior
  • Attend all required rehearsals
  • Perform in Spring Dance Concert (3 summative grades for the 3rd nine weeks grading period)
  • Dance Levels 3 & 4, Theatre Dance 3 & 4, Men’s 3 & 4: must be part of both Informal Concerts
  • Write a self-evaluation and/or a critique of the concert.

The Dance Department Spring Concert is an excellent learning tool in which all dancers have the opportunity to perform for a live audience in a formal setting.  This is a very rewarding experience for every student involved.  Participation in the concert is a mandatory part of their grade for the third nine weeks.  Students will receive three summative grades for their participation in the dance concert.

Technical & Spacing Rehearsals:

Sunday, February 14, 2016 (Moving Ground)                  12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Monday-Wednesday, February 15-17, 2016                       3:45 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

You may not have to be there the entire time; however, exact times will not be determined until two weeks prior to concert.  Costumes, tights/camisole, and appropriate hair style are required for Technical & Spacing Rehearsals.  Make-up application may be required.

Dress Rehearsal:

Thursday, February 18, 2016                                               3:45 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

All students are required to attend the entire Dress Rehearsal.  Costumes, tights/camisole, make-up, and appropriate hair style are required.

Performance Night:

Friday, February 19, 2016                                                     Cast Call 5:00 p.m.

Performance Time 7:00 p.m.

Curtain Call 10:00 p.m.

All dancers need to plan on being available for all of the times and dates listed above.  This needs to be a priority for you to be successful in this dance course.  If an unexpected problem or conflict arises, please see your dance instructor as soon as possible!

We will have concert DVD’s available for approximately $30.00.  This item is optional.

Informal Dance Concerts: Any students enrolled in Moving Ground Dance Company, Dance 3-4, and Theatre Dance 3-4 will also perform/work in two additional mandatory informal dance concerts.  These concerts are optional performances for Folklorico, Dance 1-2 and Theatre Dance 1-2 courses.
